Maybe I shouldn’t give this game a 10/10. I mean, it’s a virtual novel-dating simulator.
What about that warrants the praise of a masterpiece? Maybe I shouldn’t give this game a 10/10. I mean, it’s a virtual novel-dating simulator. What about that warrants the praise of a masterpiece?
That is not something I am willing to discuss in this review. I don’t even wanna say anything about this game.
Just experience it for yourself (not really a review if you don’t talk about the game, I know, but please trust me on this one, ok?). What I will say though, is that it’s free on steam and is one of the biggest surprises of the year for me. It’s characters, music, graphics, plot—you might be surprised at just how fantastic it all is. Doki Doki Literature Club is a game that will further the horror genre in ways never before imagined. This game starts off cute enough Doki Doki Literature Club is a game that will further the horror genre in ways never before imagined. This game starts off cute enough luring you into a false sense of 'Dating sim' where you begin to fall for every trick this game lays before you because they're so subtle that you don't even realize they're traps until far later in the game. The beginning can get a little monotonous as it drolls on and on.
It's a few hours of gameplay similar to the barrier of entry you'd find in any good RPG. And let me tell you now it's well worth the wait because what lies after that first psychological scare. It a whole new world of horror. I won't say much more because it's an experience you really should experience it for yourself. Just know if you're easily susceptible to dark themes, you may want to consider playing with a friend. It truly is a game worth your time, and the fact that it's free makes it easy to justify the few things wrong with the game.
This is one of those games that you should experience without reading a review for it. So, if you haven't played it yet, please go ahead and This is one of those games that you should experience without reading a review for it. So, if you haven't played it yet, please go ahead and do so, taking the game's warning seriously of course. When I first saw this game on Steam, I genuinely though the 'Psychological Horror' tag was just people abusing the system. Given the game's positive reception, its catchy cover and popularity, I decided to give it a go. After reading the reviews and being 2 hours in, I actually feared what might come next. I've never been so apprehensive about finishing a game due to its shocking nature.
And sure enough, this game truly is disturbing, even if you prepare yourself for the worst. But it's impossible to keep the game's depth a secret when that makes up 90% of the appeal. So why am I giving this a positive review?
Well, the game breaks the fourth wall like no other. I encourage you to play this game in windowed mode and after about 2 hours in, open your steamappscommonDoki Doki Literature Clubcharacters directory. These are real files with a different extension (one is a PNG, another is Base64 encoded message etc.).The game itself, written in Python2, actually changes the files (and not just those in that folder) as you play, which makes it feel truly real. But that's just some gimmick, right? Anyone could do that, it'sn ot the most creative idea. So, again, why am I giving this game a positive review?
Especially after the ending it gave me. I assure I was most certainly NOT impressed. It left me more upset with the game and the writers' decision to end it like that, so much so that the shock factor was outweighed by my dismay of how it all happened. But you realise that's not all this game has to give. What truly sets DDLC apart is that it serves a much deeper purpose than your ordinary game.
As a visual novel, this genre has very limited interactivity, and despite my inexperience with VNs, I've always wondered what the purpose of them is compared to an eBook. Yet Doki Doki Literature Club makes the best possible use of the medium. Simply put, it is a tool to raise awareness of mental health issues. It truly creates a sense of empathy that cannot be expressed in any other medium. As you 'read' through DDLC, you begin to get a sense of how truly horrible loneliness and depression must be. You start to feel bad yourself.
Then you wonder how it must feel like to live with this. Even if you can relate to some of the themes explored in DDLC, you begin to realise just how deep they can go.
It's frightening, concerning, yet what makes it so impactful is that this is not a joke. Yes, it is taken to the extreme. But it's absolutely real. These things do happen, and even if extreme cases are not so common, even milder issues must be. So, despite the sadness, this game serves not only as an educational tool but also an inspiration. An inspiration to care more about those around you, and yourself of course, if you can relate to any of the characters.
It makes you want to hug not only your friends and relatives but even strangers. It's one of those experiences that will stay with you.
'DarnifiedUI has been detected in the Hud but not in the start menu' What does this mean, and could I still play with it? 'DarNified UI has been detected in the HUD but not the Start Menu.' 'Mod Configuration Manager' (MCM) inserts itself into the 'Main/Pause' menu of Fallout New Vegas (the screen with 'Continue', 'New', 'Load', 'Save', 'Settings', etc.) to combine compliant mods configuration settings into a single menu. DarnUI makes changes to the size and position of various HUD elements, which is one of it's primary attractions. The later installing mods need to be able to detect or be told that DarnUI has been installed so they can adjust to fit. (This is usually done by installing a DarnUI specific version or patch file.). Darnified ui has been detected in the hud.
Depending on your personality, it may be haunting and you'll regret having beared witness to such tragedies. But to others, it may be a valuable learning experience.
Monika is the childhood friend of the MC. She's also the popular girl of the school, leading most of the clubs consecutively. But one day she quit, because of the drama, politics and in-fighting of the clubs. Occasionally she is sad about some of the decision she is taking but can hide it too well.
She also pokes fun from others for comic relief. She is self-aware but likes justice and only becomes creepy and corrupts the game when MC alters the files. Sayori is the MC's classmate and Monika's best friend.PersonalitySayori is described as a bundle of sunshine who values happiness the most, despite the previous self, she is spiritually-strong, perky, spunky, hardworking and a bit awkward and outgoing. She doesn't let depression take over her.
She occasionally laughs awkwardly at some embarrassing stuff. She likes literature and does everything she is asked to, but she doesn't like world being too digitally attracted to their cellphones.SynopsisNotice: This section spoils the parts of the mod that aren't influenced by the player's choice.Upon entering the game it doesn't say the usual warnings of the game (like is not for kids). Shortly the music cuts and there is just Monika in the background, with 5 options: Install Mod, Load Game, Settings, Help and Quit.Upon pressing 'Install Mod' the game ask the player to enter the name, the game sends MC into the neighborhood where Sayori and MC lives.
