Colt AR-15A2 carbine acquired today. The carbines, like yours, with the A2 type rear sights were apparently designated the 6520. In the pictures above, the serial numbers on the box and the carbine do not match up. There's a gun and ammunition, just inside the doorway. Use it only in emergency.

The serial number is GS009XXX. If someone could give me an idea of the date of manufacture and a value I would really appreciate it. Also, is the large pin front screw effect the value? Thanks guys. This is a model 6550 transitional AR.I say transitional because it's lacking a bayonet lug. The regular 6500 Colt Gov't Model would have the flash hider, bayonet lug, slab side, large take down & small fire control pins w/no sear block.
This one is only lacking the bayonet lug and should not have a sear block. The model was made in 1989 - 1991/1992 time period. I know the 6551 (which it what I have) was made between 1992 - 1994 (pre-ban's anyway).
All have the flash hider, no bayonet lug, some slab side, some have the mag fence, some are large front take down pin, some mil-spec take down pin, all have large pin fcg and sear blocks.Hope this helps.p.s. The nice thing about the 6500s & 6551s is they are the closest Colt models made for civilians to a real deal M16A2.

If it's nice I would snatch it up - just verify the aforementioned and make sure the barrel is a true Gov't Profile and is marked C MP 1/7 Nato. Originally Posted By robtar:That sucks to hear.

Your rifle is one of the most awesome machines made and is a work of art. My wife spent more than $150 today in groceries and came home with 6 bags, hardly made a dent in the pantry.
Now that is what is depressing about spending an extra $150! Originally Posted By robtar:That sucks to hear. The rifle I'm looking at trading I've got right at $1000 in. Check the EE. Seen some get a 1000 for a preban Colt and seen others bbt their ads and reduce them to get them to sell. You might could get the thousand if you decided to sell it and want to wait it out on the EE untill a buyer came along.I don't feel bad about the 1000 I paid for mine. It was a good price for it at the time I bought it. I think I shot it once.

Weapons patterned on the original design have been produced by numerous manufacturers and have been used by nations around the world, some of which created their own variations. The tables here are split in a variety of categories, and provide an overview of different subtypes.
For purposes of these tables, bold model numbers are weapons used (or previously used) by the while italic model numbers are weapons for commercial or export sale. See for an explanation of each column. Contents Colt military modelsColt has been the most visible producer of ArmaLite AR-15 pattern weapons, and the military designations M16 & M4 are heavily associated with the company. Colt has an intricate internal nomenclature system for its models, with a variety of suffixes and prefixes. Colt’s systems have generally followed the times and though its model numbers originally came without prefixes, with the need to separate weapons made for civilian consumption from those made for military and law enforcement use, military models became prefixed with the code 'RO'.
For the purposes of this table, the RO nomenclature is obviated as this terminology did not exist in all cases, but it can be understood to be present.
